Queen Elizabeth laid to rest with her husband Prince Philip at Windsor
LONDON: A private burial ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II took place at St George’s Chapel Windsor. She was laid to rest with her late husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, alongside her father, mother and sister.
Earlier, the late monarch’s coffin was lowered into the royal vault in the chapel. Her Crown Jewels were removed from the top of it during a service of prayers and hymns
It followed a day of ceremony, with a state funeral in the morning attended by world leaders and dignitaries at Westminster Abbey. Huge crowds then lined the route as her coffin was taken on a gun carriage through London and then by hearse to Windsor.
More than one and half years after Prince Philip’s funeral, the late Duke of Edinburgh’s casket was moved and reunited with his wife of seven decades, Queen Elizabeth II. The Duke’s remains are being moved from the Royal Vault.
It is stated that the royal family confirmed via a Thursday, September 15, statement that the queen — who died earlier this month at the age of 96 — will be “buried together” with her late husband. The twosome’s respective caskets will be placed in The King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Her Majesty is now reunited with her husband of 73 years and the couple has been buried together in King George VI’s Memorial Chapel in Windsor Castle. Since death Prince Philip’s remains were housed in the Royal Vault, but were moved to the memorial chapel to join the Queen.
Prince Philip passed away last April at the age of 99 and in her final Christmas address following his passing, the Queen spoke highly and fondly of her ‘mischievous’ husband.
“His sense of service, intellectual curiosity and capacity to squeeze fun out of any situation – were all irrepressible,” Her Majesty shared. “That mischievous, enquiring twinkle was as bright at the end as when I first set eyes on him.
“But life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings – and as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas.”
Also buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel are the Queen’s late father, King George VI, the late Queen mother, Eizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and Her Majesty’s sister, Princess Margaret.
World leader attend the funeral
World leaders from American President Joe Biden to French President Emmanuel Macron to India’s President Droupadi AND Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif joined members of the public in observing a two-minute silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II as the funeral service ended here with the recitation of “God Save the King”, the reworded national anthem on Monday.
The coffin of the longest-serving monarch of the United Kingdom was carried at Westminster Abbey in London today with the Royal family members and top world leaders in attendance. Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. It is the first state funeral in the UK since Winston Churchill’s in 1965.
