New Karachi police chief of Ghulam Nabi Memon

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Friday appointed Ghulam Nabi Memon as the new Karachi police chief in place of Imran Yaqoob Minhas, with the latter being transferred and posted to the position previously held by Memon.

In a notification, the Sindh government stated: “Ghulam Nabi Memon, an officer of Police Service of Pakistan (BS-21), Additional Inspector General of Police, Special Branch Sindh is transferred and posted with immediate effect and until further orders as Additional Inspector General of Police, Karachi Range vice Imran Yaqoob Minhas, transferred.”

The provincial government also issued another notification regarding Minhas’ appointment as additional inspector general of police, Counter-terrorism department (CTD) Sindh.

Ghulam Nabi Memon had previously served as the AIG Karachi in 2019 and had carried out multiple reforms in the police department as compared to his now predecessor who failed to further the reforms agenda.

Ghulam Nabi Memon is briefing media about his forthcoming measures to maintain the law-and-order situation in Karachi.

The rising street crimes have, however, remained a key issue that led to Imran Yaqoob Minhas’s ouster as the AIG Karachi. It is pertinent to mention here that as many as 11 people have been killed while resisting mugging bids in the city during the last 10 days.

Notification of appointment of Ghulam Nabi Memon

In May 2021, AIG Karachi Ghulam Nabi Memon was transferred as the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Special Branch, a post previously been held by Imran Yaqoob Minhas. During his last stint as Karachi police chief, Ghulam Nabi Memon served for 10 months.

Karachiites are already upset due to increasing crimes and took sigh of relieve over his appointment. They hope that under the leadership of Mr. Ghulam Nabi Memon, the police force will take effective action to control the situation and will maintain law and order situation very effectively.
