NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought details on the terror attack in Zewan, Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of two police personnel and left 12 others injured.

The Prime Minister also expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the personnel killed in action.” PM Narendra Modi has sought details on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also expressed condolences to the families of those security personnel who have been martyred in the attack,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

Terrorists had fired upon a police vehicle near Zewan in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar, the Kashmir Zone Police said.

One ASI and a Selection Grade Constable succumbed to their injuries in the attack.

The injured personnel have been evacuated to an Army Hospital where they are undergoing treatment, according to Kashmir Zone Police.

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha condemned the terrorist attack and expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the incident. Sinha also directed officials to provide “best possible treatment to the injured.”

“Strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist attack on Jammu and Kashmir Police bus in Srinagar. My homage to our brave martyred police personnel. We are committed to ensure that perpetrators are punished. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” he said in an official statement.

“Directed the concerned authorities to provide best possible treatment to the injured. I pray for their speedy recovery. Our police and security forces are determined to neutralize the evil forces of terrorism,” Sinha said.

Vijay Kumar pays tribute:

Kashmir Zone Inspector General of Police, Vijay Kumar on Tuesday paid tribute to constable Rameez Ahmad Baba, who lost his life in last night’s terrorist attack.

Kumar told reporters here, “It was a planned attack by two foreign terrorists and one local terrorist. Three police personnel have lost their lives in this attack. One terrorist who managed to flee will be caught and the group will be neutralised soon.”

Third police personnel succumbed to bullet injuries this morning.

Three police personnel were killed and 14 others injured after terrorists fired upon a police vehicle near a police camp at Zewan on the outskirts of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. 

The injured personnel were shifted to an Army Hospital where they are undergoing treatment, according to Kashmir Zone Police. One ASI and a Selection Grade Constable succumbed to their injuries in the attack that occurred at Pantha Chowk area of the city, Police said.

Vijay Kumar said that two foreign and a local militant were involved in the attack on a police bus in the outskirts of Srinagar at Zewan that left three policemen dead and 11 others injured.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said 25 policemen were in the bus at the time of the attack which was carried by a Jaish-e-Mohammad offshoot.

“Two foreigners and a local terrorist carried out Zewan attack. ..One terrorist got injured and his blood trail suggests that the group fled to Pampore and then to the Tral area and we are tracking them and very soon they will be neutralized,” Kumar told reporters on the sidelines of a wreath laying ceremony for the slain cops in Srinagar. We have other leads as well and will track down the group”, he added
Kumar also informed that one more policeman injured in the attack succumbed to injuries this morning.
“Yesterday evening, two policemen including an ASI succumbed to their injuries at the hospital and today morning one more policeman succumbed,” he said.
The attack on a police bus was the first major attack on security forces in the Kashmir since the Lethpora Pulwama car bombing in February 2019 that killed 40 CRPF personnel.
The IGP said the policemen foiled the weapon snatching attempt at Zewan by retaliating to the firing. “The aim was to carryout weapon snatching but our jawans effectively retaliated and foiled their attempt,” he said while terming the attack a planned one.
The senior police officer said preventive measures would be taken to prevent such attacks in the future. (Agencies)
