KARACHI: In a very tragic incident, at least 15 people have been killed sofar in a fire at a factory in Mehran Town, Korangi District, Karachi. About 25 people were trapped in the building and all are feared dead, he said.

Residents said the factory used to make suitcases and other equipment and contained chemical drums.

Between 20 and 25 people were trapped in the building. Rescue sources said that 20 to 25 people were trapped in the factory as there was no emergency exit as a result of the fire, Dawn has reported.

A Karachi police spokesman said that one of Edhi’s volunteers fell and was injured during the firefighting operation and was shifted to Jinnah Hospital.

Murtaza Wahab said that the fire has been extinguished and now the cooling process is underway. He also said that 21 people were working on the first floor of the factory out of which I confirm the death of 10.

He said that police and fire brigade personnel were investigating the matter and the report would be shared with the media after its completion.

On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the fire at the factory in Korangi and demanded a report from the Commissioner Karachi and the Labor Department.

The Sindh Chief Minister said that it should be told how the incident took place and what were the security measures, how did so many casualties occur?

He also directed the concerned authorities to extend full support to the families of the slain workers and treat the injured.

It may be recalled that on February 10, a fire broke out in a yarn factory in Baldia Town at around 11 pm, which engulfed the three-storey building in a matter of seconds. Three people were burnt to death in the blaze, while the factory building was also damaged.

The worst factory fire in Karachi took place in September 2012, in which more than 250 workers were killed in a fire at the Ali Enterprise factory in the municipality, Dawn has detailed.
