LONDON: Pakistan’s new High Commissioner to the UK, Muazzam Ahmad Khan will assume his responsibilities on Monday (September 14). Outgoing High Commissioner Mohammad Nafees Zakaria has relinquished his portfolio and will leave for Islamabad between 16 and 20th September.
In a formal meeting, Nafees Zakaria said that during his tenure of one and half years, he did his best what he could do for Pakistan and Kashmir. I got full support from diaspora for which I am very grateful. “I enjoyed my working during this period as did nine years before as deputy high commissioner. At both occasions to boost the image of Pakistan and to high light the Kashmir issue were two major tasks apart from enhancing Pak-Britain relations”, he said.
Muazzam Ahmad Khan was working sofar as Special Secretary of the Foreign Affairs looking after the administration in Islamabad. He was posted at this seat on 21st May, 2019. He is one of the senior most diplomats in the Foreign Office.
Nafees was appointed high commissioner in London in January last year and earlier he was the high commissioner for Malaysia. Moazzam Ahmad Khan had earlier served as ambassador in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Before joining the Foreign Ministry as Special Secretary, Muazzam was ambassador to the UAE and before that was on the same position in Netherlands. He enjoys a good reputation in the Pakistan Foreign Office and is known as a competent officer. He is a career diplomat, had joined the Foreign Service in 1986 and has represented Pakistan in various capacities.
Before taking up the position of ambassador to the Netherlands, he was the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012-2013. He also served as director-general (Foreign Minister’s Office) and director-general (Europe). He worked in the position of a minister at the Embassy of Pakistan, Washington DC. In addition to his numerous other assignments, he also served as a Counsellor at the High Commission of Pakistan in India from 2003-2006.
He holds a masters in International Relations and International Economics from Johns Hopkins University, School for Advance International Studies, USA. Muazzam Khan, 57, has three children and his wife, Leena Salim Moazzam, is also a career diplomat. She has served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Portugal.
Before coming to London, Muazzam Ahmad Khan held meetings with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, AJK President Sardar Masood Khan and other personalities in relations to his new assignment.
