ISLAMABAD: As was expected, Lt Gen ® Asim Saleem Bajwa Thursday denied all charges levelled by prominent journalist Ahmed Noorani in his story displayed at his website and announced that he has decided to resign as special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on information.
But he is not willing to leave the portfolio of Chairman, CPEC, huge Pak-China project with unprecedented and investment. He said that he will continue to serve as the chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority.
He issued a four-page rebuttal to this story which alleged offshore properties and businesses of Asim Bajwa, his wife, sons and brothers in America and other places.
He met Imran Khan the following day (on Friday) and submitted his resignation but he refused to accept it and asked him to continue his responsibilities.
Answering questions about the allegations regarding his family’s businesses in Noorani’s report, Bajwa said he has all the relevant documents to support his money trail.”Being a Pakistani citizen, I am ready to provide the money trail, document or any sort of evidence on any platform,” he said.
On Thursday, Bajwa in a tweet denied what he termed as “baseless allegations” against him and his family.”Alhamdolillah another attempt to damage our reputation belied/exposed. I have and will always serve Pakistan with pride and dignity,” he wrote.
When the report was first published, Bajwa had denied the allegations on Twitter, saying: “A malicious propaganda story published on an unknown site, against me and my family, is strongly rebutted.”
While denying the allegations, he did not say what action he would like to take against the journalist Ahmed Noorani who lives in America and has not come out with his reaction in defence of his story that has become talk of the town within and outside Pakistan.
He said that he has “not shied away to explain the allegations shamelessly leveled” against him.”These allegations have been hurled at me to tarnish my image,” he said.
* My declaration of assets and liabilities as an SAPM in the Federal Government dated 22.06.2020 is incorrect because I have failed to disclose the investment of my wife abroad.
* My brothers have conducted businesses in the USA and their growth of business is relatable to my promotion in the Pakistan Army.
* Random mention has been made of companies, businesses and properties, owned by my brothers and children, with sweeping allegations regarding their evaluation and propriety.
* All the adverse insinuations leveled in the news item in question so also the aspects mentioned in the para 2 above, are materially false,” Lt Gen Bajwa said.
He said that the allegation that his declaration of assets and liabilities dated June 22 suffers from omission of the investment of his wife abroad, is “materially false”.
He said that when the declaration was filed, his wife was “no longer an investor or shareholder in any business” belonging to his brothers or anyone else abroad.”My wife had disinvested all her interests as at 01.06.2020 in any entity abroad and such fact has been duly documented in the official records in the USA,” he said, adding that the company registered in the SECP in Pakistan was Liaison Office of the companies in the USA.
