Gen Bajwa discusses ‘peace deal’ with Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah

ISLAMABAD: As an outcome of an unscheduled meeting between Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation and Pak Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on at GHQ, Rawalpindi on Sunday, the later suddenly and unannounced reached Kabul and held meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Gen Bajwa discussed the deal with Afghan president and earlier with Zalmay Khalidzad on Sunday. It was officially announced after the Sunday meeting that the overall regional security situation and matters of mutual interest including Afghan refugees issue and Afghan reconciliation process and Pak-Afghan border management were discussed during the meeting. Both shared steps taken in this regard and agreed to continue working towards mutually agreed goals. DG-ISI Lt. Gen Faiz Hameed was seated next to Army chief at the meeting.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa arrived in Kabul on Tuesday on a one-day visit where he held talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. They discussed bilateral issues, border management and the Afghan peace process. He was accompanied by Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed and Pakistan’s recently appointed Special Envoy to Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq on his visit to Afghanistan.

Afghan refugees issue, Afghan reconciliation process and Pak-Afghan border management also came under discussion. Both shared steps taken in this regard and agreed to continue working towards mutually agreed goals.  The Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan and Iron fences and border issues on the border between the two countries have also been discussed.

The power- sharing deal between Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah (signed on Sunday May 18) was referred into discussion in both meetings on Sunday and today.

The deal was reportedly hoped an ending a bitter months-long feud that plunged the country into political crisis and experts of Afghan affairs also feel so. Under the deal, Doctor Abdullah will lead the National Reconciliation High Commission and members of his team will be included in the cabinet.

Khalilzad meets Mullah Baradar

After meeting with Gen Bajwa at GHQ, Rawalpindi on Sunday, the US peace envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and the commander of foreign troops in Afghanistan, US General Scott Miller, met with the Taliban’s deputy leader Mullah Baradar in Doha the same day.

The Political Deputy- Amir, IEA and Head of the Political Office, Mullah Baradar Akhund and his delegation discussed the way to bring the country at normalcy. Both sides talked about speedy release of the prisoners and commencement of intra-Afghan negotiations, Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani, Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister of the State of Qatar and his delegation also participated in the meeting,” tweeted Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for Taliban.
