MUMBAI: Sunday was the sad day for all cinemagoers and fans of Bollywood when a talented artist Sushant Singh Rajput died. But he left a mystery behind. Was he murdered or committee suicide. A day after actor Sushant Singh was found dead at his Mumbai residence, a team of forensic experts reached his Bandra residence on Monday.
Sushant’s provisional post mortem report has revealed that the provisional cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhishek Trimukhe said on Monday.
But his family has alleged that the Bollywood actor was rather murdered, and demanded an investigation into the death of the 34-year-old actor. Sushant’s family arrived at the Mumbai airport from Patna to perform his last rites.
The ‘Kai Po Che’ actor had allegedly died of suicide earlier on Sunday at his Bandra residence, the police had said.
“Actor Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide at his Bandra residence by hanging himself in Mumbai on Sunday,” Additional Commissioner of Police Dr Manoj Sharma confirmed.
However, no suicide note has been recovered from Rajput’s residence, as per the police. Further investigation is underway. Several Bollywood celebrities, sportspersons, and politicians from across the board expressed their shock and grief over Rajput’s demise.
Sushant Singh Rajput was on Monday cremated here at Vile Parle’s Pawan Hans crematorium amidst heavy downpours and a small gathering of his relatives and close friends from the cinema industry.
An ambulance carried his cadaver from Mumbai’s Cooper hospital to the cremation ground. Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in the country, only a gathering of 20 people including his family was allowed by the police to attend the funeral.
Several Bollywood celebrities including Sushant’s ‘Raabta’ co-star Kriti Sanon had arrived at the crematorium. Sanon was joined by casting director Mukesh Chhabra to bid the last farewell to the actor.
The late actor’s ‘Chhichhore’ co-stars Shraddha Kapoor, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Varun Sharma were also present at his funeral. Besides, Abhishek Kapoor who had directed two films starring Rajput including his Bollywood debut ‘Kai Po Che!’ was also present at the ceremony with his wife Pragya Kapoor.
Others actors — Vivek Oberoi and Krystle D’Souza — too reached the crematorium. Rajput had allegedly died of suicide at his Bandra residence here by hanging himself on Sunday. However, no suicide note has been recovered his residence, police said.
Rajput, who started his acting career on TV, made his Bollywood debut in 2013 with director Abhishek Kapoor in Kai Po Che, based on the book by Chetan Bhagat.
Social media was flooded with tributes and messages of condolence, with many reacting to the news with disbelief.

“Please take utmost care of my father to protect him from coronavirus,” Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput (34) told house help Laxmi Devi, who works at the residence of his father, KK Singh, in Patna. It was a routine phonecall, giving little indication that it would be the last conversation that the father and son would have.
On Sunday, just as he sat for lunch, KK Singh got another call from Mumbai, hoping it was from his son. It was a call from the Mumbai Police, informing him that Sushant had been found dead at his Bandra residence. A retired government servant, KK Singh lost his wife several years ago.
Sushant’s father fell unconscious. He was distraught, as friends and neighbours tried to console him. “He is in a state of shock,” said a family member.
Sushant spent his childhood in Patna, where he was a student at St Karen’s High School. A large number of people, including Digha BJP MLA Sanjiv Chorusia, gathered at KK Singh’s house. “It is a great loss. He was such a talented actor. He was a pride of Bihar. I will urge the Centre to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances leading to death,” said Chaurasia.
A family member said that Sushant had called three days ago. He’d spoken to his father and inquired about his health, and advised him not to go outdoors due to pandemic.
Shah Rukh Khan is shocked and saddened by the news of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Posting a picture with Sushant, Shah Rukh wrote on Twtitter, “He loved me so much…I will miss him so much. His energy, enthusiasm and his full happy smile. May Allah bless his soul and my condolences to his near and dear ones. This is extremely sad….and so shocking!!”
Shah Rukh and Sushant had much in common. They both came from a non-film background and successfully made a transition from the small screen to films.
Disha also committed suicide
Sushant Singh Rajput and Varun Sharma’s former manager Disha Salian passed away on Monday after allegedly falling off the 14th floor of her friend’s residence in Mumbai’s Malad. Now, as per the police report, Disha did not commit suicide but fell off the window of the apartment at 1 am on Tuesday. It is also reported that she was drinking with friends after dinner and was tipsy and hence, she slipped off the window.
Incidentally, the actor’s death due to suspected suicide came just a few days after his former manager, Disha Salian (28) died after falling off a high-rise building at Malad in Mumbai on June 8. Disha had also worked with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and comedienne Bharti Singh.
Mumbai Police have registered a case of accidental death. It is suspected that the former celebrity manager had also committed suicide.

The happy-go-lucky actor who always had a positive outlook on life appeared in his last film Chhichhore which ironically was also based on suicide.
In the movie, Sushant played the role of Aniruddh or Anni, a father of a teenage son, Raghav, who is awaiting the result of an engineering college entrance test.
Upon learning that he has not been able to clear the exam, Raghav attempts suicide by jumping off the balcony and ends up in coma. The movie then follows the journey of Anni in a flashback where it takes the viewers to his college days.
