LAST week I had the chance to meet the actor, Varun Sharma. When I was on my way to meet you instantly begin to think of lots of questions to ask, wonder how the actor will behave and you begin to create an image of the person you’re about to meet. By the time I reached and saw Varun, I quickly realized that he was such a lovely and down to earth personality and this is a big quality of a person. How a person treats the other person and the respect they give is hugely important and can be judged straight away; after a few minutes it began to feel as if I had known him from years.

We talked about his entry into the industry and his desire to be an actor, Varun said that he always wanted to be an actor since the age of 7 years old. “When Shahrukh Khans film, Baazigar, came out I danced and sang the song in my language ‘Kaali Kaali Aankhein’  and I went to my mother and said that I wanted to be an actor when I grow up- so at the age of seven I decided my career.  My family and especially my mum was very supportive of me and encouraged me to pursue my acting career and I had also had a degree in film making. That’s how my film journey started- I came to Mumbai and joined as an assistant in casting, taking auditions and did films like Student of the Year and Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani..
When I asked about his struggle and challenges to get into the industry,  he said “yes it was hard and took a lot of patience and persistence as we face lots of rejections everyday, you can’t make it through all auditions so it is a part and parcel but otherwise it is a very welcoming industry in my personal experience; there are lot of good people around and if you are focused and talented you can make a place.”

I was interested in how Varun dealt with rejection and all the stress or depression that came alongside it; “it was very tough, you get up in the morning,  get ready and go to auditions and come back rejected. It is not easy, but I am lucky that I have a very supportive family and I used to chat with my sister, my sister was a strong pillar to me in my struggling days and my mum too. With her blessings and my focus and determination I went through the motions, I never had any back up plan so my full focus was to be an actor and nothing else.
After lots of auditions, first film Fukreyhappened, the process took a while and then I got a call that I am in the film. After this my life changed; I got the chance to work with Shahrukh Khan, who was my inspiration to join the industry, I had been offered the movie, Dilwale, to work with Shahrukh Khan, Varun Dhawan and Kajol- I was very excited and nervous, it was a big deal but it was a beautiful experience and everyone was so good and supportive.
I received a lot of awards as a comic actor such as: Zee Cine, Star Awards, but I never thought that I will get the awards- I was so excited that people watched my film! I was happy!”

When asked about his inspiration, he spoke only of one person, Shahrukh Khan, and in Varun’s wish list of directors he wants to work with is Zoya Akhtar and actors in he wants to work with, he named Salman Khan. I asked Varun what one advice he would give to those people who want to join the industry, Varun said “dream big and it will turn into reality, I am a live example to that and auditions is the way to do it. Just be focused, persistent and work hard to achieve your goals.”

Varun was here in London for the shooting of his film Chichoorey, his upcoming films are Arjun Patiala with Kriti Sanon and Diljit Dosanjh produced by Maddock Films & T series, an untitled film with Sonakshi Sinha and Roohafza with Rajkumar. He is an overall humble, kind and talented person and I wish him all the best and more success for the future.
