Armed robber Asif jailed for over 3 years

WALSALL: An armed robber who threatened shop staff with a knife has been jailed after he was snared by DNA from a glove grabbed from him by a member of the public, West Midlands police have reported.

Asif Jhangeer jumped over a counter at Wolverhampton Road Post Office in Walsall and loaded up hundreds of pounds worth of cigarettes into a bag on 21 November last year.

As the masked 39-year-old attempted to leave he was tackled by a woman who entered the store after hearing the commotion. Jhangeer had left the knife on the counter and as they tussled she was able to remove a glove he was wearing.

The robber managed to flee but West Midlands Police were able to link him to the crime from DNA testing on both items. Jhangeer, of Cameron Road, Walsall, pleaded guilty to the armed robbery and was jailed for three years and four months at Wolverhampton Crown Court last Wednesday (10 April).
DC Andy Atkinson, from Force CID at Bloxwich, said: “This was a terrifying experience for the shop worker who was threatened with the knife.”But thanks to the brave actions of the member of the public who confronted Jhangeer we were able to secure vital DNA evidence.  This left Jhangeer with little choice but to plead guilty and put him behind bars.”
