LONDON: ‘Gul Makai’ – a rich tribute for Nobel Laureate Malala Yousfuzai will be screen in London on Friday 25th January.  Director Amjad Khan is overwhelmed that his film, on the life of Malala Yousufzai, will have a special screening in London. It is being organised by the UN. “I am happy and I am very proud that my film ‘Gul Makai’ is being screened in London,” Khan said in a statement.

UN Goodwill Ambassador Roy Fernandes said the film will be screened for 450 dignitaries from across the world. These include members of the UN and IIMSAM ((Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition).
Members of the Indian, Pakistani and British High Commissions will also be present, along with Malala and her parents Ziauddin Yousafzai and Toor Pekai. Another screening of the film will be hosted mid-February at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Director Amjad Khan revealed that Gul Makai is his tribute to Yousafzai for everything she has achieved and represents as a young and inspiring icon. The film’s name has been obtained from the pseudonym that the Yousafzai herself used while writing blogs about her life in the Swat valley for BBC Urdu.

The first look of the film isn’t just any old poster though, it’s a motion poster which features actor Reem Shaikh, who plays the Nobel laureate holding a burning book. Shaikh can be seen with a book in her hand which upon opening, explodes and starts to burn.

Kabir Bedi has lent his voice in the background saying, “This is about those times when the Taliban was destroying Pakistan and Afghanistan in the name of Jihad and religion. When from a very small village in Pakistan, a voice arose.”

The poster of the film has, without a doubt, made more than just an impression and speaks volumes about the astonishing life of the young activist. The film’s official synopsis reads, “Gul Makai accounts the courageous journey and struggle of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming the champion for free education to all.”

It adds, “Gul Makai is a small tribute to this lion-hearted girl who is in every essence a global citizen championing a cause that transcends boundaries, caste, religion and geography.”

The film is featured by national award winning actors Divya Dutta, the late Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni and Reem Shaikh. The movie is expected to release in cinemas on April 2019.
