Dilip Kumar celebrates 96th birthday, Amitabh wishes the ‘ultimate master’


MUMBAI: Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar, who turns96 today, celebrates his special day with his close friends and family membersand wife Saira Banu. During a recentmedia interaction with IANS, Dilip Kumar’s family friend Faisal Farooqui saidthat Mr Kumar has not celebrated his birthday in a long time. He also revealedthat Saira Banu (Dilip Kumar’s wife) will host a small get togetherat her residence, which will be attended by the actor’s brother and sisters.

Faisal Farooqui told IANS: “He (Dilip Kumar) has not done that in a very long time and birthdays are occasions where the family gets together and some close friends get together. So, saab’s brothers and sisters and Saira Banuji’s extended family will come and then my family and some close friends gather together.”

It seems like Dilip Kumar is not a fan of birthday parties. Faisal continues, “Even when Saab was active socially and personally, he was not fond of big celebrations. So, doing justice to that tradition, Sairaji has not planned anything big.”

In September and October, he was admitted to a hospital for recurrent pneumonia. But he is now at home and recovering. He has not fully recovered but he is making great progress.

From the film fraternity, Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to wish the legend. He wrote, “The ultimate master of his craft… Dilip Kumar – Mohammed Yusuf Khan… turns 96… prayers and duas for his good health and happiness always. The history of Indian Cinema shall always be written as ‘before Dilip Kumar and after Dilip Kumar.

As legendary actor Dilip Kumar turns 96 on Tuesday (December 11), Amitabh Bachchan extended his warm wishes to the veteran on his special day. Big B took to his official Twitter handle to post a heartfelt birthday wish for the ‘tragedy king’ of Bollywood. “T 3022 – The ultimate MASTER of his craft .. Dilip Kumar – Mohammed Yusuf Khan .. turns 96 .. prayers and duas for his good health and happiness always .. the history of Indian Cinema shall always be written as ‘before Dilip Kumar and after Dilip Kumar’,” the actor wrote.

Bachchan and Kumar have co-starred in the 1983 film ‘Shakti’. According to various media reports the ‘Babul’ actor will be ringing in his 96th birthday with his close friends and family members.

Kumar was recently hospitalised due to recurring pneumonia but the actor’s family friend Faisal Farooqui (who is usually in charge of Kumar’s Twitter handle) had said that as of now the actor is recovering and responding well to his treatment. The superstar has been suffering from age-related health problems in the recent past.

He is best-known for iconic roles in films like ‘Devdas ‘(1955), ‘Naya Daur’ (1957), ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960), ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961), ‘Kranti’ (1981), and ‘Karma’ (1986).

He was last seen on the big screen in ‘Qila’ in 1998 and was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. (ANI)
