Pak diaspora in Britain welcome possible appointment of Nafees Zakaria as new PHC

LONDON: Pakistani diaspora in Britain has welcomed the reports related to possible appointment of senior diplomat Mohammad Nafees Zakaria as new high commissioner to the UK and termed it as wise and far-reaching decision in given circumstances.

“He is highly experienced diplomat, fully capable, will project Pakistan and defend the Kashmir cause” as he had been doing here as Deputy High Commissioner. He will fulfil his job he left behind and as high commissioner will now accomplish the task”, the members of diaspora said adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan should approve the recommendation of Foreign Ministry in this regard.

According to Pakistan Foreign Office, London is among five significant and sensitive foreign destinations apart from Washington, Riyadh New Delhi, Moscow and Beijing. That is reason, that only a senior and well experienced diplomat can be appointed in London. Mohammad Nafis Zakaria is considered the most appropriate choice for this important portfolio.

At the moment he is ambassador to Malaysia. He had been in London as Minister Political, then Head of Chancery and Deputy High Commissioner before going back to Islamabad. He had also served as the consul general in Toronto and later as spokesperson for the Foreign Office.

He is very humble, polite and decent person with deep thoughts. The sources said that the Foreign Office is impressed with his good service record. He worked hard while was in London and used to attend almost every important meeting at every forum representing Pakistan and Kashmir case. His dedicated performance was highlight applauded by the Pakistani community.

According to Islamabad sources, the Foreign Office has moved a fresh summary to Prime Minister Imran Khan for the appointment of new envoy to UK, with the name of Nafees Zakaria on the top of the list. Pakistan’s ambassador to Germany Johar Saleem, ambassador to Belgium Naghmana Hashmi and Foreign Ministry Additional Secretary Zaheer Janjua are also named in the list. Prime Minister Imran Khan will decide the new high commissioner.

Keeping in view the impressive service record especially the UK experience, Nafees Zakaria is considered as favourite choice and will likely to be the new envoy in London. He was very popular among the Pakistani diaspora and a number of farewell receptions were held in his honour. People expressed their desire to see him as a high commissioner.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Pakistan’s career diplomats serving as ambassadors in Singapore, Philippines, and Hungary are retiring this month and a summary is being prepared for the appointment of new envoys to these countries. According to Sources, NAB has summoned the ambassador to Washington to appear before the court on October 29. He has already appeared in NAB court before going to Washington to take-over the assignment.
