Shoaib Malik vows to help team win 2019 World Cup

LAHORE: Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has expressed his desire to end his cricketing career by playing a vital role in Pakistan team’s victory in the 2019 World Cup. Pakistan team will feature in the T20 triangular series involving hosts Zimbabwe and Australia from July 1 to 8 and then they will play a five-match series against Zimbabwe from July 13. “I have achieved everything in my cricketing career being part of Pakistan teams, which won T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy and what is left is to see my team winning the ODI World Cup,” said Malik while talking to the reporters after the opening day of the team’s training camp for Zimbabwe tour.
Shoaib said he is enjoying playing cricket and he will hang up his shoes in ODI after the World Cup in 2019. “After quitting one day cricket I will concentrate on T20 cricket provided I am able to maintain required form and fitness,” he said.
To a query, he said he has no regret to retire from Test cricket as he wanted to prolong his cricket career paying more attention to one day and T20 formats. “I took this decision not only for myself but taking into consideration Pakistan cricket and to pay attention to my family,” said Shoaib.
When asked about Pakistan’s prospects in the triangular series, he said: “Australia is the number two team in the T20 ranking and it is going to be a tough event but our team has bright chance as it comprises young talent which has proved its potential in the cricket world.
“We have ideal atmosphere in the team, on and off the field, while they are also performing like a unit. Those, who are not part on the team and sitting in the dressing room, are very concerned about team’s performance and praying for its success, which is a very healthy sign as we miss such coordination and unity not even in our team but also in our culture, he added.
Malik said it is good to see that Pakistan cricket team is playing good number of matches in ODI and T20. “It is the best way to improve the skills and talent of players and it also helps in elevating team’s performance and it is the result of commitment and hard work of players that our team have started producing results not only in short versions of the game but also in the test cricket,” he said.
The all-rounder praised the role of the selection committee and said it comprises quality cricketers, who are taking right decisions keeping an en eye on the future of Pakistan cricket. “The selection committee is giving chance to those players, who are showing consistency, which is very important in every player’s career and helps him build and prolong his career,” he said and added: “Consistency helps in making stars and it is only way to success. The senior players are helping the young ones in learning from their expertise and standing in the game.”
He called upon the young generation not to spend a lot of time one their mobile phones rather spare some time for sports activities. “Without physical fitness, a player or a team cannot progress in modern day cricket and fitness is a prime factor in taking teams to excellence,” Malik concluded.
