MANCHESTER: Greater Manchester Police (GMP) celebrated the work of volunteers across the Force as part of National Volunteers Week (1–7 June). GMP’s volunteers provide support in a variety of different areas and enable the Force to strength relationships with the communities of Greater Manchester.
Roles include special constables, police support volunteers, police cadets, museum and band volunteers. Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “I would like to thank all of our volunteers who give up their free time to help others and contribute to making our communities a safer and happier place to live. “GMPis committed to developing our volunteer schemes, the passion and enthusiasm of all our volunteers is truly commendable and they play an integral role in policing Greater Manchester.” To mark the week and to say thank you to the contribution volunteers make, GMP held its annual Citizens in Policing Awards at the Hilton Manchester Airport Hotel on 2 June 2018.
They were attended by guests such as The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Dr Robina Shah MBE DL JP, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Mr Barry Dixon, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins and Mayor for Policing and Crime Beverley Hughes.
11 categories were recognised during the awards including Special Constabulary individual and team, Police Support Volunteer individual and team, Volunteer Police Cadet of the year, an Active Citizens awards and Leadership award. Specials also took to the streets as part of National Specials Weekend (2–3 June) to promote the work that they do in local communities. Deputy Mayor Bev Hughes said, “The people that volunteer for Greater Manchester Police really do reflect the best of our diverse communities through their tireless work both behind the scenes and in front facing roles. Our young people give up their free time after school and college to help out at community events as Police Cadets. There are Police Support Volunteers, of all ages, skills and background who help to support our police officers and staff in the day to day running of GMP.
