MUMBAI: The Pakistani actor’s Bollywood debut Hindi Medium, which has recently been screening in China, broke all Hindi cinema records in the country. Within the first weekend of its screening, the Irrfan, Saba starrer raked in INR138.42 crore, making it the highest opening for a Hindi film in China. It has broken records of Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which collected INR12.99 crore and Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan that made INR14.61.
Directed by Saket Chadhury, Hindi Medium follows the journey of two parents who want their daughter to get the education they could not afford to have. According to latest reports, there will be a sequel to the film; unfortunately we won’t be seeing Saba Qamar in it.
Earlier, in June last year, it was reported that the film has crossed the 50 crore mark in the Indian box office, revealed movie business analyst Taran Adarsh. Apart from Irrfan Khan’s obvious pull factor, word-of-mouth publicity may have also contributed to its success. Actors Saba Qamar and Irrfan Khan have been praised for their strong performances and many in the audience have said to have related to the ordeal of parents bending over backwards to have their child admitted in a good school.
Irrfan Khan sure knows how to put a smile on Saba Qamar’s face. At least that’s what all the teaser shots from their upcoming project Hindi Medium suggest. As the release of Saba and Irrfan’s film nears, the Bollywood actor shared a picture of the two from the sets of their film, where the Pakistani actor is furiously blushing. Hindi Medium revolves around the lives of a middle-class couple settled in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. Saba plays Irrfan’s imposing and chirpy wife. The film has been directed by Saket Chaudhary.
Meanwhile, Kahaani star Vidya Balan fished out Saba Qamar’s phone number to send her a personal message of appreciation for her work, Saba revealed in an Instagram post. Vidya wrote to Saba, “Just wanted to tell you that you were amazing in the film. It’s a character that one could easily dislike for being too pushy but you humanised her and made her believable and likable. Really, wow!” Saba, of course, was over the moon. “Being praised by one of the best actresses of Bollywood is a huge deal for me. I’m truly touched and honoured,” she wrote.
“Such a sweet gesture by her to take out the time to appreciate my work. It’s the best feeling ever when someone you admire so much, praises and appreciates your work.” Other Bollywood stars, like veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, has also tweeted appreciation for Saba Qamar.
