MUMBAI: Bollywood’s first female superstar Sridevi, who mesmerised the Indian audience with films like Chandni, Lamhe, Chaalbaaz, Mr.India and Sadma among others, passed away on February 24 in Dubai. Her untimely death came as a shocker for her fans, friends and colleagues.

Stepson Arjun Kapoor, nephew Mohit Marwah were seen on the truck carrying the remains of the 54-year-old actress. She was given the state of honour by the Mumbai Police while her family looked on at the Celebrations Sports Club. The cremation ceremony of the actress took place at Vile Parle Seva Samaj Crematorium and Hindu Cemetery at 3.30 pm. Earlier in the day, a sea of fans and celebrities thronged the condolence meeting of the actress to have a last glimpse of the yester year diva, who, passed away on February 24.
The mortal remains of Sridevi were wrapped in red and golden Kanchivaram saree and kept in a glass cascade. Many big names from the industry such as Subhash Ghai, Tabu, Aishwarya Rai, Jaya Bachchan, Sushmita Sen, Isha Deol, Hema Malini, Manish Paul, Farah Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sonal Chauhan, Satish Kaushik, Annu Kapoor, Alka Yagnik, Kajol, Ajay Devgn among others came to pay their respect. The veteran actress passed away on February 24 in Dubai, where she was attending a wedding of nephew Mohit Marwah.
Following the death of his beloved wife, film producer Boney Kapoor posted an emotional note from her account bidding goodbye to the ‘love of his life’. This is, however, the last post shared on Sridevi’s Twitter by her husband, hours after she was cremated with state honours in Mumbai. Boney Kapoor expressed gratitude towards family and friends stating, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my family, friends, colleagues who have stood by us like rocks. I am blessed to have the support and love of Arjun and Anshula, who have been such pillars of strength for myself, Khushi and Janhvi. Together, as a family, we have tried to face this unbearable loss.”
“To the world, she was their Chandni, but to me, she was my love, my friend, mother to our girls, my partner. To our daughters, she was their everything, their life,” it further read. He also requested the media to respect their privacy and give them “space to grief.” Lastly, Boney Kapoor wrote, “She was and is an actor that is irreplaceable. Love and respect her for that. The curtains never come down on an actor’s life because they shine on the silver screen.” According to the forensic report, the 54-year-old Indian actress died of accidental drowning in her hotel room’s bathtub, after suffering a dizzying spell. According to reports, traces of alcohol were found in her body too. The cremation ceremony took place at Vile Parle’s Seva Samaj Crematorium and Hindu Cemetery from 3:30 pm onwards on Wednesday in Mumbai.
Sridevi died on Saturday evening at a hotel in Dubai, where she had gone with her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi to attend a family wedding. Her death, initially thought to be a cardiac arrest, was caused by “accidental drowning”, the Dubai police said after an investigation. Her body was flown into Mumbai last evening on a private aircraft after the formalities were completed. Over the last few days, her former co-stars Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Venkatesh, Jaya Prada, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher had visited the home of Anil Kapoor – Sridevi’s brother-in-law and former co-star — to pay their respects. The Maharashtra government decided to accord actress Sridevi full state honours at her funeral scheduled later on Wednesday afternoon, official sources said, The state honours for the actress, who was conferred Padma Shri in 2013, included draping her body in the national tricolour, elaborate arrangements by the Mumbai Police, and a gun salute before the cremation. Meanwhile, several thousands of mourners, including celebrities, Bollywood personalities, politicians and business persons, grieved for the queen of the silver screen Sridevi in Mumbai on Wednesday. Since dawn, thousands of teary-eyed fans and admirers of the late actress, many carrying flowers, had started queueing up outside the Celebration Sports Club at Lokhandwala Complex for a final ‘darshan’ of their idol.
After the flower-bedecked body was brought to the Club premises, a steady stream of celebrities started alighting from their vehicles and were whisked inside to pay their last respects.
Among the early callers were Rekha, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Arbaaz Khan, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Farah Khan, Nitin Mukesh, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Madhur Bhandarkar, Deepika Padukone, Sanjay Leela Bhandsali, Jackie Shroff, Farhan Akhtar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, John Abraham, Sulabha Arya, Ajay Devgn and Kajol, among many others.
Earlier, in the past four days since her demise, the Kapoor household had witnessed a steady stream of visitors, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Krishna Raj Kapoor, among others.
Most visitors on Wednesday were sporting dark sunglasses to ward off the harsh early-summer glare, and carrying flowers or small bouquets. They embraced and consoled the bereaved family members, fleeting in from the main entrance and out from the other side as fans tried to catch a glimpse.
Despite the late hour, several hundreds of fans kept vigil outside the residence when a motorcade, including an ambulance, reached there late on Tuesday.
Sridevi died following accidental drowning in the bathtub in her hotel room in Dubai around 11 p.m. on Saturday night, plunging millions of Indians and her fans in shocked gloom as the news emerged on Sunday morning.
For three days, the Dubai police authorities completed various legal and medical formalities before the body was finally handed over to the Kapoor family on Tuesday afternoon.

Srideva was one of Bollywood’s most popular actresses, having starred in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada films.
Her acting career started at the age of four, debuting in the 1969 Tamil devotional drama film Thunaivan. In 1975, she had her first Bollywood film as a child actress in the hit movie Julie, and for the first time played a lead role in Bollywood in the film Solva Sawan in 1978.
Wikipedia’s list of some of her successful Bollywood movies included Himmatwala (1983), Mawaali (1983), Tohfa (1984), Naya Kadam (1984), Maqsad (1984), Masterji (1985), Nazrana (1987), Mr. India (1987), Waqt Ki Awaz (1988) and Chandni (1989), some of which won her five Filmfare Awards and 10 nominations.
She was honored in 2013 by the Indian government with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor, and was voted ‘India’s Greatest Actress in 100 Years’ in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted in the same year during the 100th anniversary celebration of Indian cinema.
Dubai police issue report
NEW DELHI: The Dubai Police has handed over the letters for the release of the mortal remains of the Indian cinema icon Sridevi to the Indian Consulate and the family, as quoted by the Gulf News. Now, after the release, the late actress’ body can proceed for embalming. Meanwhile, Bollywood actor and late actress Sridevi’s stepson, Arjun Kapoor, has arrived in Dubai on Tuesday morning to show support to his father, Boney Kapoor.
According to the forensic report, the 54-year-old Indian actress died of accidental drowning in her hotel room’s bathtub, after suffering a dizzying spell. Traces of alcohol were also found in the actor’s body.
Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases.
