ANANTNAG (J&K): Security forces on Monday launched a major cordon and search operation in at least seven villages of Shopian southern district where as clashes erupted during another search operation in another village of the same district.
Local sources said that the security forces including army and Special Operations Group of police early morning laid a siege around several villages of the district following intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area.
The security forces, they said, besides sealing the main entry points of these villages conducted house to house searches in some localities. Some of the villages which were under cordon include Nowgam, Dangam, Wangam, Vehil and Chatripora.
The operation, local sources said, was, however, called off after almost five hours after there was no contact with the militants. Security forces this year carried out such major search operations in the district at least six times. Later in the evening clashes erupted in Batmuran village of Wangam in the same district after the security forces laid a siege to the village following inputs about the presence of militants.
As soon the security forces, local sources said, arrived in the village and began conducting searches, people mostly youth came out of their houses and started clashing with forces to disrupt the operation. The youth, they said, also made announcements on public address systems asking the people to come out.
